eSafety Forum


Established in early 2003 by the Commission in close co-operation with the industry, industrial associations and public sector stakeholders, the eSafety Forum is a joint platform involving all road safety stakeholders. Its general objective is to promote and monitor the implementation of the recommendations identified by the eSafety Working Group and to support the development, deployment and use of eSafety systems.

 

Its organisation is managed by the Steering Group, which meets up to 6 times a year. The Steering Group defines the work programme of the Forum as well as membership issues and the Working Groups.

 

Based on the results of the eSafety Working Group and other consultations, in September 2003, the Commission adopted a Communication on Information and Communications Technologies for Safe and Intelligent Vehicles. The Communication brings forward the actions the Commission intends to take in order to accelerate the development, large-scale deployment and use of active safety systems (Intelligent Integrated Safety Systems).

 

The eleven actions of the Communication fall into three categories:

  • Promoting Intelligent Integrated Safety Systems
  • Adapting the regulatory and standardisation provisions
  • Removing the societal and business obstacles

 

From this joint platform, a number of Working Groups have been organised which address the key issues or technologies targeted by the recommendations. The themes include:
